David Monacchi will discuss the last developments of his long-term multidisciplinary research project Fragments of Extinction - Acoustic Biodiversity of the Primary Equatorial Rainforests, an environmental sound-art project on the sixth mass extinction. Through slides from the last trip to the Dzanga-Sangha dense forest reserve in Africa, field recording examples, analysis of the ecological principles and compositional issues related, Monacchi will explain the reasons, the goals, the musical outcome and the perspectives of his large scale eco-acoustic installations in museums and public spaces, and the particular use of recorded biomes for designing the soundscape for cinema.
As an element of background to this talk, go to Arts Electric and read Monacchi's accounting of his trip to the Central African Republic.
Composer, sound artist, researcher in acoustic bio-diversity, David Monacchi records sonic environments throughout the world to create documentaries, installations and compositions for festivals and museums. His music is performed in Europe and North America. His honors include Locarno Film Festival, Bourges, Russolo-Pratella competitions, Erato-Farnesina and Fulbright fellowships.
