This all-day symposium and concert, produced by Electronic Music Foundation in collaboration with the NYU Music Technology Program at the Frederick Loewe Theater in New York, was the first Ear to the Earth event.

10am - noon: Workshops


Ned Mooney, Andrea Williams, Michelle Nagai, Andrea Polli

Andrea Polli led a panel in which Ned Mooney, Michelle Nagai, Robbin Gheesling, Andrea Callard, Andrea Williams, and David Watson, all members of the New York Society for Acoustic Ecology, described the New York Soundmap Project and explained how to use the Googlemap API to create online interactive maps.


Steven Feld

Ethnomusicologist and composer Steven Feld discussed his techniques for field recording in the Bosavi Rainforest, Africa, Europe, and Japan, and how they relate to his compositional strategies.

 

1 - 1:45pm: Keynote Speech


E. J. McAdams

Keynote speaker E. J. McAdams, Executive Director of New York City Audubon, was introduced by author and performer David Rothenberg. Mr. McAdams discussed the role of the arts in engaging the public in environmental issues.

 

2 - 3:30pm: Panel: Listening to the World

Media artist Andrea Polli moderated and participated in this panel. Other participants were EMF president Joel Chadabe (in place of UNESCO DigiArts Portal director Tereza Wagner, who could not attend; ethnomusicologist, author, and composer Steven Feld; and composer and sound artist Annea Lockwood.

 

4 - 5:30pm: Panel: Interspecies Communication

Sound artist Steven M. Miller, moderator, introduced author and sound artist David Dunn; author and performer David Rothenberg; and E. J. McAdams, Executive Director of New York Audubon Society. The panel discussed issues of intentional and unintentional messages in interspecies communication.
