ABOUT THE ARTIST

Andrea Polli
Andrea Polli is a media artist whose work often brings together artists and scientists from various disciplines to address issues related to global systems, the real time interconnectivity of these systems, and the effect of these systems on individuals. Her recent work includes a sonification of weather in the Arctic and a National Science Foundation-sponsored research project in Antarctica. She has exhibited, performed, and lectured nationally and internationally and is currently Director, Interdisciplinary Film and Digital Media, at the Univewrsity of New Mexico at Albuquerque.

ABOUT CLOUD CAR

The connection between the automobile, life and the air in New York City was demonstrated through Cloud Car, a Ford Taurus station wagon parked at the installation site and fitted with mist bars, hoses, pumps and other special effects equipment that produced a cloud of mist, enveloping car and rider.

The installation was presented by Polli and professional special-effects technician Chuck Varga. The mist bars and hoses were securely attached underneath the car, on top of the rack, and on the sides of the car (allowing front doors to open). The hoses drew water from an electricity-powered water pump designed specifically for the mist system.
