Participate in the inauguration of the Xenakis Project of the Americas, a new organization of the Brook Center for Music Research and Documentation.
Celebrate the official launch of Performing Xenakis, a compilation of thirty essays by leading international performers of Xenakis' music, published by Pendragon Press.
And listen to a concert of fabulous musicians — Rohan de Saram, Roger Woodward, David Schotzko, Lori Freedman, Benny Sluchin, Conrad Harris, and the Jack Quartet — playing Xenakis' music.
Iannis Xenakis
Iannis Xenakis, civil engineer, architect, associate of Le Corbusier in the 1950s, is among the most radical and original of 20th-century composers. Pioneer in electronic music and in the use of stochastic processes, he is the author of Formalized Music, founder of CEMAMu (Center for Studies in Mathematics and Automated Music), and recipient of the prestigious Kyoto Prize.
Lori Freedman
Lori Freedman is known internationally for her provocative and creative performances and compositions. Over thirty composers have written solo bass clarinet music for her and her work has been recorded on 40 CDs. She has worked with Maurizio Kagel, Helmut Lachenmann, Philippe Leroux, Rohan de Saram, Joëlle Léandre, Frances-Marie Uitti, and George Lewis.
Rohan de Saram
In November 2005 Rohan bid farewell to the Arditti Quartet in order to pursue his own artistic vision. He works now with a variety of artists, friends and composers, bringing together music from a range of musical periods and parts of the world, both eastern and western, classical and contemporary, composed music and improvisations, with players from many musical backgrounds.
Conrad Harris
Conrad Harris has performed new works for violin at Ostrava Days, Darmstadt Ferrienkürse, Radio France, Warsaw Autumn, and other important festivals. He is a member of the FLUX Quartet and concertmaster/soloist with the S.E.M. Orchestra. He has performed and recorded with Elliott Sharp, Jean-Claude Risset, Alvin Lucier, David Behrman, Robert Ashley, Gordon Mumma, and other artists.
Benny Sluchin
Since 1976, Benny Sluchin has been a member of the Ensemble InterContemporain in Paris, playing the most representative music of the present century and participating as soloist in premieres of solo works by Iannis Xenakis, Vinko Globokar, Gerard Grisey, Jonathan Harvey, and many other composers. He also participates in various research projects in brass acoustics and musicolgy.
Roger Woodward
Xenakis dedicated three works to pianist and conductor Roger Woodward, with whom he forged an intimate working relationship that involved the major international music festivals with a wide range of orchestras, chamber ensembles and international radio and television networks ranging from the BBC, French and German Radio to networks in the USA, Poland, Italy, Japan, Israel and Australia.
David Schotzko
As a soloist, chamber musician, and concert curator, percussionist David Schotzko is a passionate advocate for contemporary music. A founding member of International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), he has premiered over 300 works by composers such as Julio Estrada, Steve Reich, David Lang, Magnus Lindberg, Philippe Manoury, John Luther Adams, Tan Dun, and James Tenney.
Jack Quartet
The Jack Quartet — violinists Christopher Otto and Ari Streisfeld, violist John Pickford Richards, and cellist Kevin McFarland — has performed at Carnegie Hall, Venice Biennale, Lucerne Festival, Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik, and other festivals worldwide. The New York Times called their performance of Xenakis' quartets one of the "most memorable classical music presentations of 2008."
